Disposable Vape Jargon Buster: 20 Terms Every Buyer Should Know

By ONEWING GROUP LIMITED · Updated 2026 · Reading time: 8 min

The vape category runs on jargon, and the trade buyer who knows the vocabulary is the buyer who stocks the spec, not the marketing. These 20 terms cover the cell, the coil, the e-liquid, the compliance, and the authentication — the five clusters that define a documented shelf. This is the jargon buster, stated for trade buyers.

The vocabulary is the shelf’s defence — know the 20 terms.
The vocabulary is the shelf’s defence — know the 20 terms.

The cell cluster: terms 1 to 4

mAh (milliamp-hour): The cell capacity. A 2600mAh cell on an 18ml tank is charge-free; a 650mAh cell on a 20ml tank is rechargeable. The mAh is the maths that determines whether a device needs charging.

Lithium cell: The battery chemistry used in disposable vapes. Requires UN38.3 transport test summaries for freight, and dedicated battery recycling at end-of-life.

Charge-free: A device where the cell capacity covers the full tank without recharging. The HERC (2600mAh/18ml) is charge-free; a 650mAh/20ml device is not.

Self-discharge: The slow loss of cell charge in storage. A device stored over 12 months may self-discharge below the firing threshold — rotate stock FIFO.

The coil cluster: terms 5 to 8

Mesh coil: A coil made of mesh (net-like) rather than wound wire. Mesh offers more vaporisation surface area, more consistent flavour, and longer life than wound wire. The HERC uses mesh.

Wound wire coil: The older coil type, made of wire wound around a core. Cheaper, less consistent flavour, shorter life. A device with wound wire on a high-capacity tank will fade before the e-liquid is spent.

Coil-to-tank pairing: The matching of coil type to tank volume. Mesh on an 18ml tank is honest; wound wire on an 18ml tank is a device that will fade. The pairing is the spec, not the marketing.

Regulated output: A chip that fires the coil at a consistent wattage from first puff to last. The HERC has regulated output; a dumb disposable fires until the cell dies, with fading flavour.

The e-liquid cluster: terms 9 to 12

VG (Vegetable Glycerin): The base liquid that produces vapour. Higher VG means more vapour, sweeter taste, thicker liquid. The VG ratio affects vapour volume and throat feel.

PG (Propylene Glycol): The base liquid that carries flavour and throat hit. Higher PG means more throat hit, sharper flavour, thinner liquid. The PG ratio affects flavour intensity and throat feel.

VG/PG ratio: The balance of vapour (VG) to flavour/throat hit (PG). A 50/50 ratio is balanced; 70/30 VG is vapour-forward; 30/70 VG is flavour-forward. The ratio is the e-liquid’s character.

Nicotine strength (mg/mL): The nicotine concentration. The TGA cap in Australia is 20mg/mL for general pharmacy-channel supply. A device above 20mg/mL is not lawful for general supply.

The compliance cluster: terms 13 to 16

TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration): The federal regulator for nicotine vaping products in Australia. TGA documentation is the federal compliance layer; a supplier without it is a supplier whose stock cannot ship lawfully.

20mg/mL cap: The TGA’s nicotine strength ceiling for general pharmacy-channel supply. A device above 20mg/mL is not lawful for general supply in Australia — verify the strength before stocking.

UN38.3: The transport safety standard for lithium cells. A device without UN38.3 test summaries may be seized at customs — and the cell safety cannot be verified. The HERC carries UN38.3 documentation.

State Tobacco Act: The state-level enforcement layer (e.g. NSW PoC Tobacco Act, Qld Tobacco Act 1998, Tas Public Health Act 1997). Federal TGA + state act = dual-layer compliance; verify both on every shipment.

The vocabulary is the shelf’s defence — know the 20 terms.

The authentication cluster: terms 17 to 20

Batch code: A laser-etched or printed identifier linking a device to a production run. The first verification layer — a supplier who cannot trace a batch code is a supplier whose stock is not verifiable.

QR authentication: A QR code on the carton linking to an authentication server. Scan the code, the server confirms genuine, production date, and first-shipment location. A re-used code flags a counterfeit. The HERC carries QR authentication.

Pair-testing: A production-line test where every device is fired before packaging. A pair-tested device has a DOA rate below 0.5 per cent; a non-pair-tested device has a higher DOA rate. Ask the supplier if they pair-test.

Compliance pack: The full documentation set: TGA docs, QR authentication, batch code, UN38.3, state licensing. The HERC’s compliance pack is the documentation premium — and the shelf that carries it commands the margin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does mAh mean on a vape?

mAh (milliamp-hour) is the cell capacity. A 2600mAh cell on an 18ml tank is charge-free (the cell covers the tank without recharging); a 650mAh cell on a 20ml tank is rechargeable (the cell dies before the e-liquid). The mAh is the maths that determines whether a device needs charging — verify it against the tank volume.

What is a mesh coil in a vape?

A coil made of mesh (net-like) rather than wound wire. Mesh offers more vaporisation surface area, more consistent flavour, and longer life than wound wire. The HERC uses mesh. A device with wound wire on a high-capacity tank will fade before the e-liquid is spent — the coil-to-tank pairing is the spec.

What is the TGA cap for nicotine vapes in Australia?

20mg/mL for general pharmacy-channel supply. A device above 20mg/mL is not lawful for general supply in Australia — verify the nicotine strength before stocking. TGA documentation is the federal compliance layer; a supplier without it is a supplier whose stock cannot ship lawfully.

What is a vape compliance pack?

The full documentation set: TGA docs (federal), QR authentication (counterfeit defence), batch code (production traceability), UN38.3 (transport safety), and state licensing (state enforcement layer). The HERC’s compliance pack is the documentation premium — the shelf that carries it commands the margin in a tightening regulatory environment.
